LONDON -- Britain will rely on oil imports this year for the first time in more than a decade and four years earlier than the government forecast, the Business newspaper has reported, citing David Fyfe, an International Energy Agency analyst.

North Sea crude output will be less than 1.7 million barrels a day this year, 100,000 lower than demand, the newspaper said. Oil output will be 1.65 million b/d in the first half of this year; it will fall to 1.55 million in the third quarter and then rise to 1.66 million in the fourth quarter, the newspaper said. The IEA estimates British oil demand to average more than 1.8 million b/d this year, the newspaper said. PIN/THE GLOBE & MAIL
