Cambodia , Thailand and Vietnam signed in Hanoi on Jan. 12 a framework for cooperation in countering oil spills in the Gulf of Thailand .

The document was signed during the fifth meeting of the Gulf of Thailand Working Group by Dr. Lonh Heal, Director of the Cambodian Environment Ministrys Environment Department; Tawalyarat Onsira, Director of the Thai Transport Ministry's Sea Department; and Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Duc Soat, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam National Rescue Committee. The tripartite oil spill contingency plan aims to improve the capacity of each country as well as the Gulf of Thailand region in preventing and responding to any oil slicks. To achieve the aim, the plan will centre on sharing information, conducting research, outlining projects, training personnel, and carrying out joint activities against oil spill incidents when they occur. “The document meets the need for further cooperation and sustainable development of not only Vietnam but also the entire Gulf of Thailand region. It will help boost and concretise cooperation between Vietnam , Cambodia and Thailand ,” Vice Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Cong Thanh said at the signing ceremony.
