TEHRAN - Government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham said here Monday that Iran welcomes proposals or further negotiations to help resolve the nuclear issue without sacrificing its national intersts.

"Our situation is new. Talks with Russia can be further continued. There is no problem to continuation of negotiations. "The door of negotiations are still open," Elham told domestic and foreign reporters at his weekly press conference. "Iran has a successful nuclear diplomacy." He cited Iran's refusal to compromise on its principles and convictions to suit world public opinion and the IAEA's failure to get a consensus on its nuclear case as two of the reasons behind its successful policy. "The Western states have always been antagonistic to an independent, strong and advanced Iran. They do not want Iran to produce capable scientists. "This is not limited to just nuclear issues. They do not wish to see an independent government running Iran." Elham said the Westerners seek ideaological colonization and scientific backwardness in Iran, adding that "wisdom leads to development and progress. This is what the West fears will take place in Iran." He stressed that in the nuclear issue the country did not succumb to pressures and insisted on its rights and defense of national interests. "This resistance can be considered a success because it means the country is determined to pursue its national interests. "The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran is backed by the nation. The nation stands with it." The spokesman asked, "Can it not be regarded as a success when Iranian diplomcy breaks the efforts of certain states to rally others to their cause and use all their powers to force countries to fall in line but we have been able to break their attempt to make a consensus through our diplomacy?" "IAEA resolutions had previously been backed by consensus but today we have seen opposing statements and votes. "We saw abstentions at the meeting with certain members in the IAEA Board of Governors clearly under pressures and threats, including economic ones." He added: "Today, those who did not accept Iran's right to nuclear energy (in the resolution) admit that nuclear energy is indeed Iran's right but were pressured to vote with the opposite side. "They cannot hide behind pretexts that they supported the resolution in the interest of development and progress. "The Western states made a big mistake and have proven to second and third generations of the Revolution that they are against the progress of other nations. PIN/IRNA
